Carpenter Beach focuses on craftsmanship By George Gill
On a hot summer day, Carpenter Beach Construction co-owner Charlie Beach is high up on scaffolding near the roof of a house east of Middleburg, taking a hands-on approach alongside his crew.
"I like working with your hands," Beach said, "and seeing the results of your labors."
"I enjoy being able to step back at end of the day and see what we've created," fellow co-owner Scott Carpenter said.
Loudoun companies Carpenter Construction and Beachmark Construction earlier this year merged to form Carpenter Beach Construction LLC, a full-service company specializing in design/build, historic renovation and custom homes in Loudoun and Clarke counties.

Phone: 540-338-7906 | They also provide craftsman services, such as porch, deck, basement, barn and small project building. Their handyman division provides time and materials solutions to customers who have small jobs they need to accomplish. They have also started building custom garden sheds and follys (garden building constructed mainly for visual effect) for existing customers and will be displaying the projects at their Berryville location, which is along Route 7.
Local boys
Beach graduated from Loudoun Valley High School in 1984, went to college at University of Virginia and started his business, Beachmark Construction, in 1996. He grew up in Waterford and was well-known for work he did on historic properties in Waterford and in Clarke County.
Carpenter graduated from Loudoun Valley in 1981, went to college on a tennis scholarship at George Mason University, and then played the European Tennis circuit for a few years before setting back in the area and starting his business in 1984. He is on the board of Loudoun Golf and Country Club, coaches football for Upper Loudoun Youth Football league and also coaches lacrosse.
Merger
Carpenter and Beach worked on a variety of projects together with their separate companies before deciding to merge.
When Carpenter started his own business in 1984, he focused on small projects and with each successful completion of one project, worked his way up to larger design/build projects and into custom home building. Beach's company grew similarly, except he focused on restoring historic properties and has won several awards for his work.
Both said they had solid crews and large customer bases and knew it was time to take on more work.
Beach said they had together restored several houses before. "We had a partnership, Beach Carpenter Properties LLC, where we would buy old houses, restore them and put them back on the market," he said.
The two eventually started talking about merging their companies. Carpenter said a key benefit was divvying up their duties.
"We wanted to expand both of our businesses," Carpenter said. "We realized in order to do that, we really needed someone to supervise the field operations, and then someone to supervise the administrative end of the business."
"We'd both done it to a certain extent one way, so we figured we'd try it doing it a different way," Beach said.
"Not only have we been friends and business associates for a long time, we work well together and we realized that this would be a good combination for both of us," Carpenter said.
He said the merger enabled them to better serve and communicate with their customers. He said one of the problems in their line of work is being able to communicate on a regular basis with their customers.
"Having someone be in the office full time allows us to do that," he said. "In the field, Charlie can go and visit the various job sites, and answer any questions that our lead carpenters can't answer. That face-to-face interaction with the customer is very important."
The company has full-time staff to answer questions, schedule meetings and generate proposals. It puts a priority on meeting with interested customers quickly and scheduling jobs in a timely fashion.
The company has nine employees overall, including Carpenter, Beach and a receptionist.
Employee Adam Painter said Carpenter and Beach are good to work for because "they understand what it's like to do construction. Like the other day was roasting hot, so Charlie said, 'if it's too hot, go on home.'"
Customers
Customer Bob Anderson said he was pleased with a major job Carpenter Beach completed in July on his four-bedroom home with attached two-car garage in Purcellville.
"It was almost a rebuild of the house," Anderson said. "They built a two-story sunroom in the back, re-sided it with new siding and put concrete brickwork in the front driveway. It was a six-month project."
Anderson said he knew the men and their parents, so he trusted Carpenter and Beach.
"People stop in front of the house looking at it, telling us that it looks great," Anderson said. "It really turned out fantastic. I would recommend them to anybody."
Tom Lamon, who lives just south of Leesburg, said he has been very pleased with the relatively small, 2,500-square-foot house that Carpenter and Beach each helped build about six years ago.
Lamon said he's in the process of having another house built in Madison.
"Scott has spoiled us as far as general contractors," he said. "We knew he was good when we worked with him, but now we realize he was much better than we imagined."
Lamon said Beach helped Carpenter build the house, including putting up trusses, though they weren't business partners at the time.
"They're both great guys and they do great work," he said.
Lamon said the subcontractors who work for Carpenter Beach are also excellent. "The subs gravitate towards a good general contractor, which both of them are," he said.
"When someone comes through to look through the house, whether a county inspector or what not, they were always pretty impressed with all of the work these guys got done."
